Safe Routes to School Classroom Activities (from the NHTSA) include lesson plans on Pedestrian Safety Training (for 1st and 2nd graders), Bicycle Safety Training (for 3rd through 5th graders), and ideas for incorporating Safe Routes concepts into math and social science, geography, English, history, and science classes.
Create a Weekly Walk ‘n Roll Program
Learn about Pleasant Hill Elementary’s successful Walk ‘n Roll Wednesday program. This parent-led program uses barcode-scanning technology from Active4.me to track students’ mileage, number of trips, and emissions saved by walking or rolling to school. Parents receive text notifications when their child is scanned in at school, and students collect “Trip Charms” throughout the year. Nearly 200 PHE students bike or walk every Wednesday, resulting in less school-zone traffic, reduced truancy, and increased physical activity and community-building.
K-8 schools in Mt. Diablo, Martinez, and Walnut Creek school districts are eligible for free Walk ‘n Roll program funding. Learn more
Schools outside these districts can download this toolkit (pdf) to learn how to start a Weekly Walk ‘n Roll program on your own.
