Contra Costa Transportation Authority’s Safe Routes to School program, known as Street Smarts Contra Costa (SSCC), is active in every Contra Costa community. Currently funded by an OBAG Cycle 3 grant, SSCC continues to expand programs and services that support schools and jurisdictions to both educate students on bicycle and pedestrian safety as well as to encourage students and families to use active modes, carpools, or transit to get to and from school and throughout their communities. To serve each of the large and diverse regions of the county, the program is implemented by three locally based teams in the communities they serve. Using various funding sources over the last two decades, the Street Smarts program was originally established in 2004 in the San Ramon Valley. The Diablo Region launched a similar program in 2012, and Contra Costa Health’s Building Healthy Communities program started offering safe routes programs in West Contra Costa in 2012.
